Sit back and relax while Yoga Chef Jess lovingly prepares your fresh, vegan food throughout your retreat. As an expert in Health and Nutrition, seasonal eating, and foraging- Jess will be curating a Summer Menu to satiate your senses and fuel your adventures. Use this time to detoxify from unhealthy eating habits and maybe even find some new favorite dishes along the way.

If you have never eaten vegan food before, your retreat will be a great chance to indulge and enjoy this healthy diet option. In fact, at our last retreat, our food was so good that some folks didn’t even realize they had been eating plant-based for 5 days!

Jessica’s cuisine will leave you feeling full & satisfied!

What to Expect:

Every session will include elements of pranayama breath and kriya energy, providing you with a well-rounded and holistic yoga program. There will be a few sessions focused exclusively on this breath and energy work.

  • Bethany Boyd

Hello! I’m Bethany and together with my husband, Terry, I own the hostel. I have had a seasonal life in Denali since 2009 and my husband has since 2003. He started his own photography tour business in 2010 and in 2017 we began formulating plans to buy a property and grow his tour business. But property in Denali is scarce and it’s expensive to build. The following year, the hostel was put on the market. We decided to go for it and started operating the hostel in 2019. It has truly been a dream come true for me.

Since starting my life in Denali, I have longed to have a place to live and work with friends, a place that provides good jobs and great experiences, and a place that instills magical wonder and awe in all who visit. I am thrilled and honored to develop a business that expresses my passion for Denali and its wilderness. We are looking forward to hosting this Second Annual Yoga Retreat and we hope you enjoy the hostel as much as we do!

If you would like to arrive a day earlier or stay a day later you will receive a 10% discount on room rates- please indicate on your registration form if you plan to stay extra nights and we will have this arranged for you.

  • Alaska in the summer is beautiful! July is the hottest month of the year in Denali with an average high of 65 F / low of 51 F and rainfall tends to be mild. That being said, pack layers! The rugged and mountainous terrain of the Denali area isolates small regions such that the weather where and when you are can be extremely different from the weather a mile or an hour away. Rain at the hostel could be sunshine and rainbows in the park and vice versa. Bring a small bag and never go adventuring without gear for 80F (27C) and sunny, 33F (1C) and rainy, and everything between - no matter what time of year.

  • At the summer solstice the sun dips below the northern horizon for two hours, creating twenty-four hours of visible light! By the end of July, the sun will be out until 11:00 p.m. with a very early sunrise at 5:00 a.m. Wildlife activity peaks as animals are busy eating, moving and living as much as possible.

  • Yes! During your retreat, we will hike together on the Morning Mountain trail, close by the hostel. The following day you will be free to explore as you wish and join optional morning and evening classes. There is also the option to arrive a day early and/or stay a day later by arrangement with Denali Hostel and Cabins. You can indicate if you wish to do so in the registration form.

    • Yoga mat

    • Light Blanket for Yoga and Outdoors

    • Comfortable clothes, with layers and warm items for the cooler evenings

    • Sturdy shoes

    • Small Backpack (We will hike with Yoga mat, water, and packed lunch)

    • Sunscreen

    • Water bottle

    • Bug repellant

    • Mosquito net (optional- see below)

  • There are certainly plenty of mosquitoes in Alaska, but don’t let them bug you too much! For the most part, mosquitoes in Denali are similar to many areas in the continental US. However, there are also areas near wetlands and swamps where the swarms live up to their reputation. If you’re planning to explore these areas, all you have to do is prepare! Mosquito nets, a hat, long sleeves and pants, high socks, and repellent and you’re all set. There are nets and repellent available for purchase in the hostel shop if you happen to forget or change your mind when you arrive.

  • Oh My! Yes, humans are still the outsiders in the Denali area and bear sightings are common (but we haven’t heard of any lions and tigers sightings in Alaska- yet).

Wildlife is truly wild there and can be found anywhere at any time. Keep your head up and pay attention, but don’t let it scare you away! A close eye is kept on the rare animal encounters that occur near the hostel and will keep guests updated.

As part of the retreat, you will receive a wildlife safety briefing where we share how to stay safe in the event of a wildlife encounter. You will also take part in a special talk from a local naturalist about all the special flora and fauna in the area!

  • All of the accommodations use centrally located restroom and shower facilities. None of the rooms have attached bathrooms. The bathrooms are like the ones you have at home, private with separate entrances. All accommodations are located close to the facilities, you won’t have to walk more than a few yards to reach them. There’s no need for a flashlight thanks to the Midnight Sun!

  • The hostel is in an area with little to no cellular signal. We do, however, have wireless internet and most cellular providers have a free functionality called “WiFi Enabled Calling” that will allow guests to use our wireless internet for phone calls and text messages. This function will not work unless it is activated prior to reaching the hostel in an area where cell signal is available. Activating this service will vary by provider and/or device, but if you look through your phone’s settings for “Advanced Calling” or “Wi-Fi Calling”, you should find the option to enable this feature. Some providers require you to call and activate the feature. If you have any questions about it, please contact your service provider before your trip. If you would rather leave your cell phone powered down and make some calls the old-fashioned way, we also have a free landline phone available for use in the common area.

To totally enjoy the opportunity of being completely off the grid, we recommend just leaving your phone off!

  • The nearest airports are located in Anchorage and Fairbanks. The hostel is located 135 miles south from Fairbanks, and 225 miles north from Anchorage. From Anchorage, the travel options to Denali are by train, motorcoach, van transfer or rental car. From Fairbanks the options are train, van transfer or rental car.

Once you arrive in Denali, you will need transportation to get to the hostel and to/from the park during your stay. You can use the local shuttle service or a rental car. You must secure transportation in advance. There are no taxis, Ubers, Lyfts etc in Denali.

We recommend arranging this directly with Bethany, owner of Denali Hostel and Cabins who of course is an expert.

  • It is your responsibility to read and understand our Cancellation Policy and Terms + Conditions before making a reservation. Naturally, no one books with the intention of cancelling or postponing their retreat, but unexpected things do happen, so please consider purchasing travel cancellation insurance.
